The Kitchen God's WifeMy free book was, The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan

To qualify for a free book, all you need to do is create a user account, upload a picture of your bookshelf and highlight a minimum of five books you own. BookRabbit.com is different to other booksellers in that it aims to integrate social networking into book selling. Users have accounts, they can see who owns the same books, send messages, make friends, provide reviews of books and interact in the forums.

I suspect this book was chosen for me because it has a story that delves back to Shanghai of the 1920s, 30s and wartime era. One of the books I chose, Empire of the Sun, is set in Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s. The Kitchen Good’s Wife is not a book I would choose to buy (or read), nor by an author of whom I am particularly aware. Having read the first few pages, the writing style seems quite good - even if the American English may eventually grate.

My complete bookshelf was:

  • Timeline by Michael Crichton
  • Empire of the Sun by JG Ballard
  • Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  • Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
  • Ekaterinburg - The Last Days of the Romanovs by Helen Rappaport
  • Schindler’s List by Thomas Keneally
